Hans Christian Anderson's literary creation, the Little Mermaid, personifies Danish warmth and light heartedness. A lovely small statue of her is perched on a rock in Copenhagen Harbor. In this Odyssey collection, Preston introduces her to a new community of historic and spiritual beings connected with, or impacted by, the mid-1800's triangular trade between Denmark, West Africa, and the Danish West Indies.
The artist uses The Little Mermaid as his agent to observe and ask questions as she proceeds abroad on her imaginary Crown-appointed tour of Denmark's sugar industry. The exhibit is about her inspection tour. Spirits and "jumbies" abound, so please come prepared.
The artist's Opening Reception is on Friday, Feb 6, 2009 from 5:00 - 9:00. The exhibit will be on display on Strand Street in Fredericksted until March 6, Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 - 4:00. New works supplement the series.
